Rendlesham Forest

December 1980 · Suffolk, England

ExplainedA solid ordinary explanation fits the evidence.

The claim

"US airmen saw a landed craft near RAF Woodbridge, "Britain's Roswell"."

Where the idea comes from

Airmen at the US-run RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge bases reported lights in the forest on several nights. The deputy base commander, Lt Col Charles Halt, wrote a memo and recorded a tape.

What the evidence shows

  1. A bright fireball crossed southern England the first night, matching the timing of the first sighting.
  2. The Orford Ness lighthouse flashes every five seconds and lies exactly in the direction the airmen pointed on Halt's tape.
  3. The "landing marks" were examined by local police, who thought they were rabbit diggings; the radiation readings were within normal background.
  4. UK Ministry of Defence files released in 2009 found nothing of defence significance.

What is still open

Some witnesses added dramatic details decades later; their accounts are not consistent with each other or the early records.

Our verdict

Explained A meteor, a lighthouse and a dark forest explain the core record.
